Your best Story on “How-TO have great success and become an IT Hero”
Hi Team,
I am starting now to collect the BEST “From the Trenches IT stories”
from great IT people such as you !
So if you have the most amazing IT story to tell – please post it !
If you have a great success story, as well as a failures that you overcame and
learned from, we’d like to hear about it as well.
Its not the technical stuff that matters here, there are (too) many technical
forums…this is the opportunity to contribute Wisdom !
If you do not have a story of your own, you must have a great one on an other
IT Fellow you know (no need to mention names or companies).
The best stories will get selected to be included in a book I am writing
on How to Succeed as an IT PRO.

From my experience in IT some of the most simplest things that I already know about and use every day makes me a “IT Hero” almost every time. One example is when I pass on keyboard shortcut tips to my other people at where I work.
I have found that many people who have been using the MS Office programs such as Word or Excel do not even know some of the most basic keyboard shortcuts like CTRL+P, F12, or CTRL+S to help save some time.

That’s a great story! Shortcuts do save people so much
time and effort. Sometimes it is amazing — you could be using a software years and years, and then suddenly somebody comes along, looks at you and say “why are you doing it like this?” and then throws two clicks and save you a bunch of time!
Say, maybe you can post your sort cuts in the forum somewhere under tools / saving time?
I will dig mine as well and post it.

Have not have time to post more yet on that for you. Right now I am in the middle of a migration from QuickBooks to MS Great Plains v10. Been busy lately doing data imports from csv files into GP with Integration Manager.
One other thing that can help you be an “IT Hero” is have good documentation with screen shots. So next time a new exployee starts you have a complete “How To” guide for them to follow. This also keeps them from bugging you.
It is also great to have for things you only have to do once or twice a year. Since you only do it a few times a year it can be hard to remember sometimes.
